Historic Tuscaloosa Downtown Walking Tours In April 2025, history came alive every Saturday as Visit Tuscaloosa teamed up with Historic Tuscaloosa for an exciting new activity: the Historic Tuscaloosa Downtown Walking Tours. This special series was part of the Alabama Tourism Department’s statewide history-focused walking tour program. It was the perfect opportunity to dive deep into the stories that have shaped the area. The walking tours took place every Saturday in April at 10:00 a.m. at the historic Jemison-Van de Graaff Mansion . The tour lasted about 90 minutes and offered a fascinating journey through more than 200 years of Tuscaloosa’s history. Each tour was limited to 20 participants. These intimate walks ensured a personal and interactive experience as attendees discovered the city’s most historic landmarks and hidden gems. Leading the tours was Will Hawkins, the Executive Director of Historic Tuscaloosa. With his expertise and passion for the city’s past, Hawkins guided guests through Tuscaloosa’s transformation, from its time as Alabama’s state capital to its vibrant architectural and cultural evolution. He said, “The Downtown walking tour will be an informative, fun, and entertaining experience. We’ll cover as much of Tuscaloosa’s 200-year history as possible and dive into some captivating stories from our shared past. Come learn something new and walk away with a better understanding of Tuscaloosa’s glorious history.” While the tours were free to attend, donations to Historic Tuscaloosa were encouraged to help preserve the city’s historic landmarks. This event served as a great way to give back and support the ongoing preservation of the city’s heritage.

We’re in the business of creating experiences you and your guests will want to remember forever. We believe that every element of your celebration should be special, starting with the venue. Take a look at previous floorplans used by other patrons for their wedding or event! Building Details The Friedman home is constructed of red brick with walls eighteen inches thick. The front is covered with one-half inch cement, causing a pale pink aspect. The six white-wood columns support a portico roof surmounted by a balustrade. The entrance veranda is composed of white and gray Georgia marble. One of the homes outstanding features is the large colonial doorway. The original wide-planked floors were replaced by a hardwood finish. The rooms are highlighted by beautiful elaborate frescoes framing the ceilings' edges as well as circular center portions, from which delicate crystal chandeliers hang. To the right and left, wide entrances open to double parlors which almost form one large room. To the rear of the hallway is a large room extending the width of the house and raised above the front portion: one of Tuscaloosa's first "split-level" examples. Within the parlors are magnificent and rare pier mirrors, oriental rugs, shining brass figurines and antique furniture of red mahogany. A colonial stairway leads from the lest rear of the entrance hall to the four upstairs rooms. The grounds contain a one-story brick building immediately to the rear of the home. An old French garden is at the side of the house with time-worn brick walkways wandering through honeysuckle, roses, camellias, and flowering shrubs. A shady vine-covered summer house stands in the center of the garden. The approach to the home leads through a walk, lined by rose bushes and an evergreen hedge. The grounds are enclosed with a stone and iron fence. - The Tuscaloosa County Preservation Society announces name change
The Tuscaloosa County Preservation Society announces name change < Back The Tuscaloosa County Preservation Society announces name change The Tuscaloosa County Preservation Society announces name change TUSCALOOSA, AL. — The Tuscaloosa County Preservation Society announced today that they have completed a major renaming, officially changing the name of Tuscaloosa County Preservation Society to “Historic Tuscaloosa." For several years, the board members of Tuscaloosa County Preservation Society (TCPS) have thoughtfully considered ways to keep the organization relevant and contemporary. Our purpose, “to develop an awareness of the historical and cultural heritage of Tuscaloosa County," continues to remain strong as do our efforts to fulfill our objectives. In an effort to continue such objectives for future generations, the motion for the name change was carried unanimously. Our logo will remain the same with the exception of the name change. Many of the cities that have deep historical roots with active organizations that preserve their histories have made such a change. Charleston (Historic Charleston) and Natchez (Historic Natchez) are two such examples. In addition to the fact that this name was chosen to reflect our role in the community, our website and social media presence already use it. Since the time of its inception, society has worked diligently to fulfill their objectives to educate and preserve different historical aspects of the community and hope to continue to do so in the coming years as Historic Tuscaloosa.
